Nothing connecting to GSM

So the whole reason I decided to start on this project was because my parents have a lake house (middle of no where), and they do not get cell reception. I wanted to build something in order for them to get better cell reception out in the country.
I have set up everything step by step according to strcopy's blog post, but I'm not getting anything to connect to my GSM. Is this issue due to the fact that (i'm pretty sure) my phone and my girlfriends phone are both 4g? I am a novice and wanting to learn and have spent the last 2 months reading, and trying to figure this out (see previous posts) to no avail. Any recommendations or more information would be appreciated.
